About Summerville

Summerville is located in the middle of South Carolina, and it's a town with an incredible historical background and a thriving community spirit. Originally settled as Pineland Village in 1785, the town attracted plantation owners from Charleston seeking refuge from seasonal insects and swamp fever. Officially becoming a town in 1847, Summerville made history by enacting the nation's first law against cutting down trees, emphasizing a commitment to the natural beauty of the area. Despite the devastation from the 1886 Charleston earthquake, which resulted in a fire that ravaged the town square, Summerville rebuilt and flourished, maintaining its charm. Known for its significant pine trees, the town's seal proudly reads "Sacra Pinus Esto," meaning "The Pine is Sacred."

The late 19th century marked a period of growth and recognition for Summerville, particularly for its health benefits. In 1899, the International Congress of Physicians listed Summerville as one of the best places in the world for treating lung and throat disorders, thanks to its dry, sandy location and pine trees that release turpentine derivates into the air. This recognition spurred the town's development, attracting both commercial and residential growth. Today, Summerville continues to be a sought-after location for its historical significance, beautiful landscapes, and incredible events like the Flowertown Festival - more on that below.

Summerville Homes For Sale

Summerville has quite a few homes typically for sale at any given time. The town features beautiful historic homes, especially in areas like the Summerville Historic District, where antebellum architecture and charming cottages are prevalent. These homes often come with spacious yards and are surrounded by mature trees, offering  a beautiful backdrop reminiscent of the town's early days. For those who appreciate modern amenities, you'll also find a few newer developments in the area, with a bit more contemporary designs. As well, occasional older homes will also have newer amenities and renovations done recently.

The town's residential areas are thoughtfully planned to cater to just about anyone looking for a home in South Carolina. Communities like White Gables and Cane Bay Plantation offer a range of housing styles, from single-family homes to townhouses, with parks, swimming pools, and walking trails close by. You can also find the occasional waterfront property for sale along the Ashley River, providing remarkable views and easy access to water-based activities.

Summerville Attractions

Summerville is also full of attractions and amenities. One of the town's most popular events is the annual Flowertown Festival, held in Azalea Park. This event showcases local arts and crafts, food vendors, and live entertainment, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Summerville also provides itself on historical sites, such as the Colonial Dorchester State Historical Site and the Old White Meeting House Ruins and Cemetery, offering a glimpse into the town's past.

For those who love the outdoors, Summerville offers plenty of parks and recreational facilities. The Ashley River Park offers amazing views, walking trails, and opportunities for fishing and kayaking. Additionally, because this town is so close to the Ashley River, you can easily get into boating and paddleboarding. Summerville's dining opportunities are also fantastic, with local restaurants and cafes that offer everything from Southern comfort food to international options. There's a lot to love about Summerville, and we highly recommend viewing the properties for sale if you're in the market for a home near Charleston.
